The Venice RC Flying Club
An airfield in Sarasota County for Remote Control Aviators. A first class facility east of I-75.

Bob and Norma Sluyter were our next-door neighbors in Bird Bay in 1999. We admired
the radio-controlled electric model airplane he kept in his storage shed-turned work room.
Bob had left for Indiana, but suggested we call his flying friend, Tom Cummings, which we
did. On May 12th we met Tom sitting in his garage with the door open, playing with his
favorite toy - a tiny radio controlled helicopter. He gave us a great demo, then we piled
into the car and drove out to the airfield. It's way out in the boonies...Laurel Road to Kings
Gate, then north for several miles, past the county landfill (dump) and back into the woods.
The County has built an asphalt airstrip for the club, for which they pay a modest fee, but it
certainly adds to the advantages of living in Sarasota County.
Tom Cumming's Helicopter
Note the two small side rotors. They
control the direction with much
practice. The plane is so small and
so light the pilot's slightest twitch can
send it spinning - either to the ceiling,
or worse, the floor.
Roger collects his plane after
a minor tail-dive. His attitude
is, "The flight was good if the
plane's still in one piece." - or
somethng like that. Note the
airplane windsock over his
shoulder.
This beauty was made by
club member Roger. It is one
of several, including a large
biplane, he flies at the club.
There is a long row of work
benches for fine-tuning your
models.
Roger moves out toward the
cage that will protect him from
errant others. There are four
such cages. The observers'
area is also protected by wire
fencing.
This is the board displaying a
diagram of the field, names of
the officers, rules & regs,
safety requirements, and 60
numbered tags representing
radio frequencies so no two
are on the same one.
